Salivary Biomarker Study

Development of a non-invasive biomarker for measuring stress in children with somatic symptoms

Dr. Suichi Ozono, MD, PhD, Post-Doctoral Fellow and Dr Hal Siden, MD, MHSc, FRCPC

The Study:
Some children experience symptoms such as headaches, awakening problems, dizziness, fatigue and pain that doctors cannot link immediately to any diagnosis. These children may also experience psychological stress, which can aggravate their symptoms. We sometimes call the problem of medically unexplained symptoms “somatic symptom disorder.” The purpose of this study was to develop a simple, painless test (a non-invasive biomarker) for measuring stress in children who are suffering from somatic symptom disorder.
